Well, the first thing I can say is that there is a lot of white used in this book's illustrations. All this white makes it easy to focus on the subjects of the book, the peas. The pages are definitely not too busy. I feel that the illustrations do tell the story quite well. The expressions on the little pea's face are very easy to read/tell how he is feeling. The end pages give you an idea of what is to come by being green with little circles.
Would I pick it as a Caldecott winner? No it just doesn't get me excited, in other words I don't have the feeling I need to say, OH Wow. But I have to say I think it is interesting and worth looking at. Has anyone else had a chance to look at this title?

Dennis thought this book was cute when we were at the book store a few weeks ago. I glanced through it and thought it gimmicky. I doubt that is a fair assessment. Do you recommend I look at it more closely?

The word I would use for this book would be cute. I think it would have worked well as a wordless picture book. I can see myself sitting down one-on-one with a young child and telling he/she a story about the pictures. It is different and did get good reviews so I thought it was worth looking at more closely myself. I have to be honest and say I don't think it is an award winning book though. I just wanted to know if anyone else had gven any thought to the title. I think you should at least give it a second glance.

After looking more seriously at the illustrations, I really do like them a lot; the pea's expressions are wonderful. I especially like his "yum, yum, extra yum" faces. The end papers are nice too. I can't explain why the story doesn't do it for me though. A pea having to eat candy. It's cute. The story is told through illustration exceedingly well. Is a cute story Caldecott worthy? I'll hold off on answering that question until I see the other books.
