I am curious to hear what others think of these illustrations. It reminds me of the cartoons in Monty Python's Flying Circus. It isn't my favorite style, but it's an interesting interpretation of the poem.

The illustrations in Summertime Waltz are definitely not the kind that I am attracted to. I think some of them are really creepy like the drawings on the boy's face where the poem talks about smelling the water on the geraniums. I don't get the numbers on the page where "forty-nine, ready..." is written either, maybe it is just over my head.
And, I strongly feel that the pictures do not stand alone. I wouldn't have been able to get the poem if the words were not with the pictures.

There is a surreal quality to the illustrations, that's for sure. I think the "forty-nine, ready" is just a reminder of the counting for hide-and-seek, followed by the "ready or not, here I come" call.

I actually love this book! I think the illustrations are so whimsical and imaginative. Plus, they change dramatically every page--which really kept my interest. I think the text moves really well with the illustrations such as on the page that reads "Dinner is over the grownups are talking." Intermixed with the text are bizarre symbols (a fish, high-heeled shoe, ete.) which perhaps shows the nature of grownups talking "over" the heads of the children (as the text is above the heads of the children as they look up at it). Maybe I just loved this book b/c it's more my style of illustration.

I totally agree that the illustrations by Swiatkowska are excellent! When looking at the illustrations to "Summertime Waltz" I get the feeling that there is another world under the surface and that the illustrator wants readers to get a sense of this other place. The depth that's portrayed in the perspective of many illustrations in this book takes me beyond the moment.
I had the good fortune to visit the International Youth Library in Munich recently, and I was so astonished to discover how many talented European illustrators are working and publishing currently, and yet very few or none are published in the USA or other English speaking countries. This is unfortunate, as the unique and stylish illustration of many European trained artists/book illustrators would be a welcome change to what we are used to currently. Swiatkowska is a US citizen now but she grew up in Poland and was educated there (and I think she attended art school in the US too).
