I love all the bright colors used in the illustrations in Squashed in the Middle. It is sad that the end papers are just plain brown though. I really like the expressions on the people's faces in the book too. I thought it was interesting how when the text talks about how everyone talks about Daisy not to Daisy that they had little boxes with the faces of the people who were talked to, thus separating them from Daisy herself. And, she does feel separated from everyone. But here's my problem with the illustrations I just could get the whole story from the pictures without the text. As I said previously I had to read the text to totally understand why we had faces of people in little separate boxes. The picture where Daisy finally does get her family's attention is very well illustrated (where she screams at them).
I enjoyed looking at the book but I just don't the illustrations did everything they should have for the story line. What do you think?

The illustrations were excellent and I think they moved the storyline well. I was surprised that we didn't see an adult figure in Rosa's apartment though. I think the color of the endpapers actually tie in well with the variety of colors used in the background of the pages of the book. I also think Cummings used placement and perspective nicely.
